Cash App is a mobile app for money transfers from Block (formerly Square). The service has been operating in the US and UK since 2013. The application is not available in Russia.
Service functions
Cash App allows you to:
- transfer money between users
- pay for purchases in stores
- buy stocks and cryptocurrency
- receive salary into account
- take out loans up to $200
The application replaces a bank account for basic transactions. Users receive a Cash Card debit card for in-store payments and cash withdrawals.
Registration and setup
To create an account, you need a US or UK phone number. Registration process:
- Download the application from the App Store or Google Play
- Enter phone number or email
- Get verification code
- Create a unique $Cashtag - username for transfers
- Link a bank card or account
After registration, the system will ask for identity verification: name, date of birth, last 4 digits of SSN (for the USA). Without verification, limits on transactions apply.
Replenishment methods
You can top up your Cash App balance in several ways:
Bank transfer. Link your account through the Banking section. The translation takes 1-3 business days. There is no commission.
Debit card. Instant replenishment from a Visa or Mastercard. The standard commission is 3% of the amount.
Direct Deposit. The employer transfers the salary directly to Cash App. You need to provide the routing number and account number from the application.
Cash in stores. At 7-Eleven, CVS, and Walgreens, you can deposit cash into your account. Store commission - $1-4.
Translation from another user. Receiving money via $Cashtag occurs instantly without commission.
Withdrawal of funds
To a bank account. Standard withdrawal is 1-3 days without commission. Instant withdrawal - 0.5-1.75% of the amount, minimum $0.25.
Via ATM. You can withdraw cash with a Cash Card. Two free withdrawals per month from Allpoint ATMs. Other ATMs - $2.50 fee plus ATM owner fee.
Payment in stores. The Cash Card works wherever Visa is accepted. Expenses are debited from the application balance.
Transfer to another user. Sending via $Cashtag - instantly and without commission.
Availability in Russia
Cash App does not work in Russia. The service is available only to residents of the US and UK. To register you need:
- local phone number
- residential address in the US or UK
- SSN or ITIN for US users
- local bank account for full verification
Russian cards are not accepted for replenishment. VPN will not help you bypass restrictions - the system checks documents and links to local banks.
Using the application
Sending money. Enter the amount → select the recipient by $Cashtag, phone number or QR code → confirm the transfer. Money comes instantly.
Request for money. Create a request indicating the amount and send to the contact. The recipient sees the notification and can approve or deny the request.
Investments. The Investing section provides access to the purchase of shares of American companies. The minimum amount is $1. You can buy fractional shares.
Bitcoin. Buying and selling Bitcoin is available after verification. The commission is about 2% in the form of a spread between the purchase and sale prices.
Cash Card. The free debit card is linked to your app balance. You can customize the card design and enable cashback for certain categories of purchases.

Security
Cash App uses data encryption and two-factor authentication. You can enable Face ID or Touch ID to sign in. In case of suspicious transactions, the system blocks the transaction and requests confirmation.
The service is FDIC insured up to $250,000 through partner banks. This protects funds if the company goes bankrupt, but does not cover cases of fraud or account hacking.
Analogs in Russia
It’s still unclear here, since there is no direct alternative. You can consider regular payment cards as an alternative (SBP/Yumani), but this is certainly not the same. If I find a similar service, I will add to the article.
- FPS (Fast Payment System) for transfers between banks
- YuMoney (formerly Yandex.Money)
- Payment systems of banks: Tinkoff, Sber, Alfa-Bank
For international transfers, there are cryptocurrency exchanges and money transfer services available in Russia.
